A New Breed of P&L: The Open Source Business Financial Model
05/22/2007, 3:00 PM - 3:50 PM

Speaker:
Larry Augustin, Angel Investor.

The number of startup companies building around an Open Source business model has exploded in the past 5 years. Because the Open Source model is so new, we have only a few examples of what a successful Open Source company P&L should look like from startup to scale. The only experience most investors and business executives have is with traditional enterprise software company financial models. In this session we'll compare that traditional model to the Open Source model, and attempt to describe how the financial structure of a typical Open Source company evolves, starting with development and Open Source project traction through initial revenue growth and scale. Along the way we'll talk about some best practices for when and how to monetize Open Source project traction.
